Description

Upgrade your 2003-2010 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke with an ARP 250-4202 Diesel Head Stud Kit from XDP. It’s a proven fact that OEM head bolts are the weak link in a diesel engine; especially if the engine has been modified. That’s because most engines are typically assembled from the factory using Torque-To-Yield (TTY) bolts and preloaded to yield and beyond (typically 100-110%). Any increases in combustion pressure can lead to problems like blown head gaskets or catastrophic engine failure and because TTY bolts are yielded by design, they should never be re-used.

ARP is the industry leader when it comes to fasteners and manufactures heavy-duty head studs for a wide variety of popular diesel applications. Using head studs instead of standard head bolts provides your engine with the clamping force required to keep your cylinder heads from lifting and blowing a head gasket due to higher combustion pressures. For the 250-4202 Head Studs, ARP starts with a premium grade ARP2000 alloy that is rated far superior to aircraft quality alloy steels. ARP2000 is an alloy steel that can be safely heat treated to a higher level, producing a greater strength material than Chrome Moly 8740. While 8740 and ARP2000 share similar characteristics, ARP2000 is capable of achieving a higher clamp load at 220,000 psi.

Each stud is placed vertically into special racks and precisely heat-treated. This procedure ensures complete heat penetration, and the results are far superior to those lesser quality Ford 6.0 head studs from other manufacturers who just dump pieces in a basket and hope for the best. ARP head studs then go through a centerless grinding process to ensure that they are perfectly concentric. As many as ten machining steps are required to achieve this level of accuracy. The thread rolling operation (to MIL-S-8879A specs) is also done after the heat-treatment, which gives them about 2000% (that’s twenty times) better fatigue strength than lesser studs that are threaded prior to heat-treat. It costs a lot more to do it this way, because it’s tough on tooling, but the results are well worth the extra effort. Fasteners are then shot-peened to remove any surface irregularities and improve overall external integrity. The final step is a metal finishing process that is also performed in-house at ARP with a black oxide coating applied for long lasting corrosion resistance.

There is a good reason that virtually every top professional engine builder relies on ARP head studs for their all-out competition powerplants. Simply put, there’s not a better stud setup on the market today. These 6.0 Powerstroke Head Studs are a direct-fit for 2003-2007 Ford F-250/350/450/550 Super Duty, 2003-2010 Ford E-Series Vans as well as the 2003-2005 Ford Excursion. ARP also offers Inner Row Head Bolts as an add-on to compliment this head stud kit (sold separately, see related items below).

Suggested Add-On Items & Install Tips - (Sold Separately, See Related Products):
ARP is aware of forum postings providing incorrect torque values for the 6.0 ARP Head Studs. Please follow the included installation instructions for proper torque specifications and tightening sequence.

Inner Row Head Bolts (Sold Separately):
Purchase the ARP 250-4206 Inner Row Head Bolts, or XDP Inner Row Head Bolt Kit XD3020HB. The Inner Row Bolts allow you to complete the job without having to reuse the factory bolts, or source a new set while your engine is torn down. Inner row head bolts secure the intake side of the cylinder head to the engine block and help to properly complete the factory bolt torque sequence.

XDP Thread Cleaning Chasers (Sold Separately):
Both the XD40126TC (for head studs), and XD40128TC (for inner row bolts) are a great add-on that will be critical during installation. Thread Cleaning Chasers are an excellent tool to have on-hand to ensure you have properly cleaned the threads in your engine block before the installation of any fasteners. Clean threads provide accurate torque readings and will help give you peace of mind during your engine build or head gasket repair.

Questions and Answers

Is this everything I will need?
View Staff Answer
Answer

Everything needed for the studs are included. (We recommend taking a look at our XDP Powerstroke Solution with Ford Factory Head Gaskets for t everything needed to fix all the major problems with the 6.0L Powerstroke. No more stretched bolts, blown head gaskets, white smoke from the EGR cooler, or defective EGR Valves. – Click Here)

Do I have to pull the cab to install the studs?
View Staff Answer
Answer

Some recommend having the cab pulled for ease of installation, but it's not required. Installation can be done with the cab still on the truck.

Take a look at the BD-Power Dodge APPS Noise Isolator. Interference in the throttle position sensor circuits (APPS) on Dodge Cummins engines from 1994 to 2005 will create false voltage readings in the APPS circuit and cause the lock-up torque converter to rapidly cycle on and off as you drive. This quick and easy fix removes the annoying and potentially harmful RF interference.

Programmers are safe on all stock engines as long as the vehicle is being operated properly. The diesel engines found in our trucks are more than capable of handling the additional power, and often yield increases in fuel economy as well. Like most performance programmers or modules, they may raise EGT's slightly. The slight increase is nothing to be concerned about as long as the truck is being driven normally and not being abused. That being said, it's always highly recommended to have a set of gauges to monitor your temperatures even on stock, non-modified applications. (We recommend the Superchips 3841 F4 Flashpaq. This Superchips is 50 state legal and offers both Gas and Diesel CARB #’s. Click Here)

Can I install studs by pulling one headbolt at a time with out removing heads?
View Staff Answer
Answer
It can be done, but it’s not recommend. The heads should really be taken off to be checked and gaskets replaced.
What is the difference in these studs compared to the more expensive studs?
View Staff Answer
Answer

The normal ARP studs are made of a proprietary ARP 2000 material that has a 220,000 psi tensile strength and provide the clamping force required to keep cylinder heads from lifting due to exceptionally high combustion pressures. The 625 ARP stud kits are made of a Custom Age 625+® material that has a minimum rating of 260,000 psi tensile strength and are often used in heavy HP racing and sled pulling applications.
