BD-Power 1042600 Cool-It Intercooler
2001-2005 GM 6.6L Duramax LB7/LLY
The BD-Power 1042600 Cool-It Intercooler is designed with streamlined external air passages improves engine cooling while offering less fan noise and less blade resistance, plus, improving engine power and efficiency of the radiator and air conditioning heat exchangers. Designed through testing at 100+ psi turbo boost pressure and 500°F turbo outlet temperatures, our extra thick cast end tanks with support struts have integrity and long life without ballooning and cracking.
Stuffed Tube designs are commonly used on stock applications with boost pressures of 20-40 psi and 200-300°F inlet temperatures. The tubes have a thin wall and 82% heat conductivity transfer. Higher boost pressures and temperatures will cause breaking of fin-to-wall welds resulting in tubes ballooning and reduced heat transfer.
Micro Extruded Tube design is for applications producing 20-100 psi of boost pressure and inlet temperatures of 500°F+. The tubes have a 0.025” wall thickness and designed enhanced inner fins that add to performance and already strong support structure resulting in a 95% heat conductivity transfer. No cracking or separation occurred when tested at over 400 psi.
The lower the turbo boost pressure drop across the CAC (inlet vs. outlet) the higher the volume flow — the more volume of air that can flow through the CAC and the higher the turbo boost pressure will result in lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGT). BD’s Cool-It CAC’s are designed for performance diesel engines.

Buy the Banks Techni-Cooler instead

I purchased the BD intercooler about a year ago based on the representations in their advertising, graphs, and claims of lower EGTs. Their installation instructions are sketchy at best and more steps are needed than indicated. Once installed I did not notice lower EGTs, more power, or better gas mileage. However, I did install the Banks larger intercooler tubes on the BD intercooler and my EGTs went down, indicating that no matter how much bigger the intercooler is, if there is constriction going in or out of the intercooler you are not going to see much in the way of results. I asked BD why they put a black coating on their intercooler and they replied they got better results in testing for performance than with an uncoated intercooler. I find this interesting as this is the only intercooler I have seen with a coating. With the Banks Techni-Cooler you get larger tubes going in and out of the intercooler and it appears from the pictures that it has no coating, so this would seem to be a more complete package for similar money. If I had it to do over again I would order the Banks unit from Xtreme Diesel as I have found Banks personnel to be mostly unpleasant on the phone. I have found one individual at Banks that is extremely friendly and helpful but only one.
