Parts & Accessories For 2007-2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs with 3.0L CRD Engines

In 2005 Mercedes-Benz produced the OM642 3.0L V6 diesel engine for multiple vehicles overseas. In 2007 Jeep brought this engine to the North American market and installed it into the Grand Cherokee. The 3.0L V6 turbocharged diesel engine needed some modifications to meet the strict emission standards in the USA. This engine was designed with several of the same features found in most modern heavy-duty diesels. Utilizing a diesel engine provided the Jeep Grand Cherokee with improved fuel economy during normal driving conditions and while towing. When powered by the 3.0L CRD engine the Grand Cherokee was rated for 24mpg on the highway, a considerable advantage over the gasoline engine options.

The 3.0L CRD engine had the lightweight and durable foundation of an aluminum block with aluminum heads. The cylinder heads featured double overhead camshafts (DOHC) with 4 valves per cylinder. The rotating assembly consisted of forged steel connecting rods and aluminum pistons to withstand the high cylinder pressure of a diesel engine. Like many diesel engines, the 3.0L CRD employed a common-rail fuel injection system. This system was powered by a Bosh injection pump and piezo-electric fuel injectors capable of producing 24,000 PSI of rail pressure. These fuel injectors provided more efficient fueling with up to 5 injection events per combustion cycle. Mounted to the 3.0L CRD was a Garrett GT2056V variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) that was electronically controlled by the Bosch EDC17 ECU which provided optimal performance. To meet the strict emission regulations in the North American market, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) were added to this engine.

A stock Jeep Grand Cherokee powered by the 3.0L V6 CRD engine was rated at 215 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with this engine was the Chrysler W5J400 5-speed automatic transmission. The addition of a diesel engine allowed for better performance while towing, as diesels could maintain peak torque levels at lower RPMs. The CRD powered Grand Cherokee had a maximum towing capacity of 7,400 lbs. The EPA continued to enforce stricter emission regulations which eventually led to the discontinuation of the 3.0L CRD engine. After the 2008 model year, Jeep removed the diesel engine option from the Grand Cherokee lineup.
