The 2.8L CRD was manufactured by VM Motori in Cento, Italy for European vehicles. This inline 4-cylinder engine was modified to meet the EPA emission requirements in the USA. VM Motori designed this engine with similar characteristics found in heavy-duty diesel applications. The 2.8L CRD engine delivered superior fuel economy compared to gasoline engine options. This engine delivered up to 26mpg on the highway while the gas engines offered 20mpg.
The 2.8L CRD was constructed with a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head for a durable foundation. The cylinder head featured a 16-valve dual overhead camshaft design. This engine utilized a common-rail fuel system capable of producing 23,000 PSI of rail pressure for optimal engine efficiency. This high-pressure fuel system was powered by a Bosch injection pump and piezo-electric fuel injectors. Similar to most diesel engines at the time, the 2.8L CRD was fitted with a Garrett variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT). To reduce diesel emissions an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system was used on this engine.
A stock diesel-powered Jeep Liberty was rated at 160 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Paired with the 2.8L CRD engine was a Chrysler 545RFE 5-speed automatic transmission.
