AFE Differential Cover

Have had this on my truck for a few years now, just pulled it off to get it powder coated. I don't know what kind of Powder coat AFE uses, but frankly it sucks. I Also purchased an exhaust from them, and have already had to get the exhaust tip re powder coated as well. Other than the less than par powder coat no complaints.
AFE46-7001 (AFE 14-11.5 Differental Cover) Poor Quality

Just received the part from XDP on 02-05-2014. Opened the box and inspected the part only to find the O-Ring groove is less than 1mm from the Hold down bolt cover holes. One of the bolt holes has made contact with the o-ring groove causing a spur of metal to break off and go directly across o-ring groove. The o-ring is substandard and not extruded properly, it has numerous imperfections and is underfinished. All of the plug ports are underfinished and cannot accept the plugs and dipstick without over torquing. Very poor quality machining and a leak waiting to happen. I strongly do not recommend purchasing/installing this part on any truck. JD JD Angus Ranch, LLC (Owner)

Generally the cover is very nice quality. However, it was dirty on the inside, like some residual from the machining process so I had to clean it before installing. I did have a problem with the threads for the 1/8th" port so I had to spend a little extra time on that. One thing to know is the o-ring is a bit oversized and it needs to be "massaged" into place. The first few times I tried to put it together it seemed it was about a 1/2" too big. I finally figured it out, but it would be nice if the install instructions indicated that; probably wasted 30 minutes. Also, the install instructions tell you what tools you need. They say you need a 6mm socket, but you will need a 5mm socket as well. Generally, instructions don't indicate the tools needed, so I think good that they include this. However, if they are going to include it, it should include all of the info. If you have a full set of tools it's not a problem, but would be if you don't have a lot of tools, go by what the instructions say, get into the job and find out the instructions weren't complete. Also, their instructions don't indicate the tools necessary to remove the original cover so same comment as above. Lastly, they include a strap and a picture that shows the spare tire and indicates you need this in case there is a clearance problem. The problem is the picture isn't very clear on how to hook up the strap and the above expalanation isn't very helpful. Essentially there are tiedowns attached to the frame and you take the strap, attach it to one side of the frame, loosen the stock factory tire hanger, wrap the tire with the strap, attach the hook to the frame mount on the other side and tighten the strap. One last comment on XDP, the shipping was quick, but what's with the $2 handling charge? This is a parts business. You need to handle the product to ship it to the customer. Seems cheap to do do it this way, but in this case, their price was still the best and as I said, shipping was quick.

Does this come with a gasket as well? Just wonder how well the o ring seats and if syn oil will find a way to leak?

Answer

The reusable O-Ring makes for a perfect seal, regardless of the oil. It is no recommended to use a gasket along with the O-Ring.
