The Colt Cams C.343.S-S3 Stage 3 "Big Stick" Cummins Camshaft gives you excellent performance, drivability, and is the most popular Cummins Camshaft in the Colt Cams lineup. Colt has worked long and hard on their camshaft profiles and has dyno'd over 50 different combination to give you the ultimate camshaft.

Stage 3: Nicknamed the "Big Stick", this cam has gained the most popularity. Delivering the strongest mid-range torque and H.P. possible it still has good bottom end and drivability. No mods are required but a set of springs is recommended. The secret to the outstanding performance of these cams is their ramp velocity and acceleration.

  • Good To 4000 RPM
  • 30-35% Smoke Decrease
  • Average 2-3 MPG Increase
  • Approximately 200 Degree EGT Drop
  • Duration @ .050 - INT. 181 Degrees, Cam Lift 0.280, Lobe Sep. 106.0
  • Duration @ .050 - EXH. 210 Degrees, Cam Lift 0.307
Installation Notes:
Follow Cummins installation instructions, use adequate amounts of assembly lube.
Retainer Torque - 44 ft-lbs. Use red loctite.
When using retainer on Common Rail, clearance is required.
Always use new or re-crowned lifters.
Big Stick cast billets require 2nd gen 24V lifters. Cummins Part# 3942565
If using Common Rail lifted with larger head, make sure it clears the fuel pump lobe #5 on 12V engines. CR blocks should be okay but you should still check. If your gear is not pressed on all the way, the lifters could touch.
Extra clearance may be required with aftermarket connecting rods.
Drop-in cam is applicable in MOST cases, you MUST check clearances. Especially if a head has been planed, block decked, valve recessions..etc. Always check clearances before starting.

Break-In Procedure:
Cam lube on all lobes, lifter faces, and oil pump gears.
Oil all bearing journals and lifter barrels.
Always turn engine over by hand before starting, check for clearances and proper timing location.
Fire up to 1800-2000 RPM for 18-20 minutes.

Zinc Additive: Most oil companies have taken out a percentage of additives that are meant for anti-scuffing for break-in on flat tappet cams. A zinc additive must be added to your oil before you fire up your engine for the first time.

Right away saw a high 2mpg increase. Alot smoother running at idle. Noticable decrease in smoke.
Very good improvments
(Central Virginia) | August 25th, 2015
This was one of the best all around upgrades on my 97 12 valve. It helped the turbo spool quicker, lowered egts, and helped power all around. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a better running 12 valve. Order #339923
This Cam just works!!!!!!
(Northern Alberta) | September 2nd, 2015
I replaced the cam in my 98 12valve with the big stick. One of the best investments you can do. Better fuel economy, smoother running. The power to pull right from idle to 2900 Awesome product that is worth every dime.

Questions and Answers

Is a larger turbo required with this cam on a '08 6.7? I have a 6.7 that is lightly modified. 50hp nozzles, dd clutch, and smarty. will this cam work well for me or is it too extreme?
View Staff Answer

The Colt Cams Stage 3 "Big Stick" Cummins Cam Shaft delivers the strongest mid-range torque and H.P. possible but still has good bottom end and drivability. No mods or turbo upgrades are required but a set of springs is reccomended. Designed to be very well rounded this camshaft is a perfect upgrade for many street and performance applications.

I'm a little confused with this cam. I have a 89 12V and would like to install the big stick. do I have to send in a cam to be reground? If so which cam?
View Staff Answer

There is no core charge on the COLT CAMS STAGE 3 "BIG STICK" CUMMINS CAMSHAFT.

What do you mean by cr cam? What all modified things would I have to do to drop this is my 94 12v.
View Staff Answer

C.R. stands for Common Rail Engine

Aftermarket valve springs would still be recommended when running the COLT CAMS STAGE 3 "BIG STICK" CUMMINS CAMSHAFT regardless of the turbocharger on the vehicle.

Can you run a mechanical lift pump with this cam
View Staff Answer
While the Colt Cams "Big Stick" still utilizes the fuel lobe, we would recommend using a high performance frame-mounted lift pump in place of the mechanical lift pump.
