BD has been installing exhaust brakes on the Power Stroke Diesel ever since the first day of engine production in 1994. We set the standards for the amount of engine backpressure. Our tests revealed an extremely durable engine top end. The hydraulic lifters easily open the 140# valve springs. The forty pounds of backpressure the exhaust brake creates is far below the engine peak pressure. Thousands of exhaust brake installations over the years have proven this engine. The Turbo Mounted Vacuum actuated and air actuated Exhaust Brake, (compression retarder) are available for all the Ford V8 7.3 and 6.0 PowerStroke diesels. This BD Exhaust Brake simply replaces the stock rear portion of the waste gated turbine housing or as in the 6.0 it mounts down in the exhaust system. The castings incorporate BD's exclusive AlumiBronze bushing and piston ring sealed butterfly shaft that have proven to stand up to the exhaust emission environment. The brake incorporates BDs exclusive Variable Orifice technology, where the spring loaded piston in the powerful 3" vacuum cylinder or the air cylinder is compressed by the off set stainless steel butterfly once the peak retarding pressure is achieved. BD Variable Orifice exhaust brakes provide superior performance that starts at 1200 rpm with peak retarding hp achieved by 1800 rpm and then it just holds on right through the rpm range! Command the torque converter to stay locked, stay unlocked, or revert to OEM settings with the BD TorqLoc. Flip the toggle switch to position one, and the lock-up clutch is engaged, so transmission temperature remains low and the exhaust brake can work with 100% effectiveness (this is a manual setting and should only be selected under light load/light power conditions, such as highway driving). Position two reverts back to stock function, or can be wired to unlock the torque converter. Position three acts as an AutoLoc by commanding lock-up only when the exhaust brake is engaged - perfect setting for every day driving in all situations. Additionally, the TorqLoc has an Overdrive inverter option which allows the transmission to start out in Drive which will prevent upshift into the Overdrive gear - great for those who live in city/urban areas. Pacbrake exhaust brakes are relatively maintenance free when used at every opportunity. However, to get the maximum amount of trouble free service a few areas require periodic lubrication. Lubrication is one key factor for trouble free service of your exhaust brake. The two reasons that give an exhaust brake problems are worn parts and seizing parts. Worn parts are caused by extreme use without the benefit of the proper lubrication. Seized parts can be attributed to seasonal use and lack of lubrication. Periodic lubrication will prevent these two issues. Applying Pacbrakes synthetic lubricant to the moving parts at every oil change will eliminate both these problems. The flow is controlled by a spring-loaded arm, whose pressure rating and location are key factors in the functionality of the PRXB. CREATING and MAINTAINING BACKPRESSURE Backpressure is created by exhaust flow entering the housing, hitting the closed butterfly valve and being forced back out in the direction it came. PREMIUM BRAKING PERFORMANCE As the engines RPM increase, the spring compresses and the arm moves away from the butterfly valve, therefore releasing more exhaust flow through the orifice. As the RPMs decrease, the spring releases and the arm applies pressure back onto the plate, covering the hole, and ultimately releasing a smaller amount of exhaust flow.
