For the 2020 model year GM Silverado/Sierra 2500HD/3500HD pickups received multiple improvements from body style changes to drivetrain components. These trucks were powered by an updated L5P Duramax engine that provided better overall performance. This generation of Duramax-powered trucks featured a modernized body style that included a massive new grille, updated bumper with fog lights, and new headlights with built-in LED strips. The functioning hood scoop was also enlarged for the 2020 model trucks to improve airflow to the engine. Maximum towing capacity increased by about 52% from the 2019 model year to the 2020 model year. For increased towing capabilities, a new Allison transmission was paired with these trucks. Along with the mechanical updates, there was several trailering technology enhancements including 15 unique camera views.

While the 2020 GM Silverado/Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks received multiple upgrades, the L5P Duramax engine continued to utilize many components from its predecessor. The cast-iron block, cast-aluminum heads, and engine internals were carried over from the 2019 model. The Denso-powered common-rail fuel system continued to provide the L5P Duramax better rail pressure and more reliability over the Bosch system up to this point. With the significant increase in towing capacity, various components needed to be added to help the L5P Duramax engine stay cool while hauling heavy loads. Some of the new features on the 2020 L5P Duramax engine included a larger variable-speed cooling fan, additional blades on the oil cooler, and a larger hood scoop. The maximum towing capacity increased from 23,300 lbs. to 35,500 lbs. in 2020 then was raised to 36,000 lbs. in 2021. In addition, the front and rear axles along with the prop-shafts were upgraded to ensure greater durability. The steel frame was also reinforced to withstand hauling heavier loads.

Horsepower and torque remained the same from the 2019 model year being rated at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Paired with the 2020 Duramax-powered trucks was the all-new Allison 10L1000 10-speed automatic transmission. Parts for this new generation Duramax engine are readily available.
