Mercedes Benz has been a pioneer in the automotive world since Carl Benz mounted an engine to his Motorwagen and took it onto the streets of Germany in 1885. In 1936 Mercedes Benz broke into the diesel world with their first diesel powered vehicle. More than a century later Mercedes Benz remains an industry leader in the automotive industry.

Beginning in 1997 Mercedes Benz began to use a diesel inline 4-cylinder engine with a common-rail direct injection fuel system in some of their Sprinter Vans and some of their most popular cars and SUVs. Mercedes continued to expand upon this idea and introduced V-6 and V-8 variants of the engine over time.

Mercedes Sprinter Vans are a staple in the market of fleet vehicles and are used by companies around the world. Over time Sprinter Vans have also become a multi-use vehicle and are being used for camping and other recreational activities as well. The first generation of Sprinter Vans introduced in 1997 were powered by the 5-cylinder turbocharged 2.7L OM612/OM647 engine. In 2006 the second generation of Sprinter vans was introduced and featured the 3.0L V6 OM642 Mercedes engine. The 3.0L V6 in Sprinter vans delivered improved performance over the previous generation 5-cylinder diesel engine.

When it comes to hauling heavy loads, Mercedes produces engines to meet the needs of truck drivers around the world. These HD engines can be found in various commercial applications from box trucks to tractor trailers. Mercedes continues to improve their heavy-duty offerings for the ever-expanding HD market.
