In 1986, International Harvester's engine division was spun off and became the Navistar International Corporation.
Navistar produces Class 4 through 8 trucks and buses for the common carrier, private carrier, government, construction, and student/commercial transportation markets under the International and IC Bus brands. Nearly half of all school buses on the road today are IC Bus brand.

Navistar quickly started to expand its diesel engine offerings in the late 1980s. A 7.3L version of the IDI was released in 1986, and by the end of 1988, it had succeeded the long-running DV-series V8 and was also offered as an option in Ford vehicles. The DT inline-6 engine family was expanded to include a second engine in 1987 with the introduction of the DT360. In 1994, the IDI V8 was replaced by the direct-injection T444E V8. This all-new engine shared little more than its displacement with its predecessor. The T444E would also become the first diesel engine marketed as a Ford Powerstroke. The DT360 was eventually phased out in favor of the T444E, while the DT466 (now the DT466E) was joined by the bigger DT530E.

In the early 2000s, International began designing engines to meet revised commercial vehicle emission rules. The T444E was phased out in 2003, and the VT engine family, which was debuted with the VT365 V8, took its place. The DT engines received updated fuel injection and a new turbocharger for 2004, and the DT530 was replaced with the DT570. The "MaxxForce" moniker was introduced for their diesel engines beginning in 2007. The 4.5L MaxxForce5 V6 and the 6.4L MaxxForce7 V8 engines were part of the VT engine family (replacing the VT365). The DT466 was renamed MaxxForceDT, while the DT and HT570 were renamed MaxxForce9 and MaxxForce10, respectively.
