Semi Truck - Big Rig - Class 8

In the North American market, Semi-Tractors go by numerous other names such as Semis, Tractor-Trailers, Big Rigs, or 18-Wheelers. Commercial trucks are classified by gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and the classes range from 1 to 8. Semi-Trucks have a GVWR of over 33,000 pounds which makes them Class 8 vehicles. Semi-trucks usually have three axles, one steering axle and two dual-wheel drive axles. These trucks utilize an adjustable fifth-wheel trailer coupling for hauling freight cross-country.

Big Rigs are most commonly powered by heavy-duty diesel engines from manufacturers such as Cat, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. These engines utilize similar components as the diesel engines found in 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups. Most modern diesel engines used in Semi-Trucks are turbocharged and utilize a common-rail fuel system to deliver optimal performance and reduced emissions. Class 8 Trucks have to meet the same emission standards as light-duty diesels and include many of the same emission control systems, just on a larger scale. The combination of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system allow these trucks to maintain clean emissions.
