Before You Start:
- Identify Your Filter: Oiled and dry filters require different cleaning methods. Check for your filter's part number to determine which media you have. Your oiled filter’s color may fade, but the oil remains effective and may not need servicing.
- Consider A Spare: Cleaning your filter may create some “downtime,” so you may consider having an extra filter instead of waiting for your filter to air dry.
Cleaning Instructions For Oiled Air Filters:
- Tap The Filter: Gently knock your filter on a hard surface to remove loose dirt and debris.
- Spray With AFE Cleaner: Apply a generous amount of cleaner to cover the entire filter. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to break down dirt and oils.
- Rinse From The Inside Out: Rinse thoroughly using low-pressure water, from the inside out. Avoid using high pressure, which can damage the filter media.
- Let It Air Dry Naturally: Place your filter in a shaded area to dry. Do not use heat or compressed air. Let it dry completely before proceeding.
- Tip: Stuff the inside of the filter with newspaper or an absorbent towel to soak up excess water for quicker drying time.
- Apply AFE Filter Oil: Once dry, apply the oil by spraying the oil along each pleat, about 1/2" from the edge. Use enough to lightly cover the outside filter surface and allow the oil to soak in until it is dry to the touch. Don't worry – AFE oil is engine safe!
- Touch Up If Needed: Apply a small amount to any un-oiled spots to ensure full coverage.
- Reinstall The Filter: Once the filter is dry and evenly oiled, reinstall it into your intake or airbox. Never use an oiled filter without proper oil.
