Shop Torque Converters and upgrade your 2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Diesel. A torque converter is a fluid coupling device that transfers the engine's power to the transmission. It is located between the engine and the transmission. One side of the converter slides on to the transmission's input shaft and the other side bolts to a flex plate at the back of the engine. The primary components that make up the converter assembly include the impeller, stator, turbine, clutch, and front cover. When the vehicle is running, the impeller is driven by the engine and acts as a centrifugal pump. The impeller forces fluid outward toward the turbine, which is connected to the transmission's input shaft, causing the turbine to spin. For high-performance and competition applications upgraded torque converters are available. Utilizing billet steel construction allows the converter to remain completely flat under all condition. This results in improved lockup performance and less slippage. Performance converters can also include a long list of upgraded internals such as a stronger turbine and impellers, additional friction surfaces/area, improved clutch materials, Torrington roller bearing construction, tig welded pump and turbine fins, as well as Billet stator cap and apply pistons. Symptoms of a failing torque converter can include slipping, overheating, contaminated fluid, shuddering, increased stall speed, and unusual sounds. Common failure items can include a faulty torque converter clutch or clutch solenoid, as well as worn needle bearings and seals.
