One of the first, easiest, and most popular upgrades made by enthusiasts is swapping to a Cold Air Intake System. Cold Air Intake Systems are engineered to improve performance while also being generally inexpensive and simple to install. Companies, such as AFE, S&B, K&N, and many others, have designed Air Intake Systems to provide your diesel engine with greater horsepower, torque, and fuel efficiency. These manufacturers continue to raise the bar and engineer new products that take your diesel to the next level.
IMPROVE AIRFLOW & PERFORMANCE
Cold Air Intake Systems are designed and manufactured to improve performance by providing your engine with increased airflow. The OEM air ducting that makes up your factory intake system is often restrictive and generally undersized, causing poor air flow. In addition to the restrictive tubing, the factory-equipped air filter is usually another choke point that starves your engine for air. Cold Air Intake Systems are built with upgraded air filters that provide greater airflow with a larger surface area, and in most cases, are washable and re-usable. Put a Cold Air Intake on your vehicle today for better air flow, enhanced performance, and increased engine efficiency.
OILED VS DRY FILTERS
Performance dry filters are a newer addition to the aftermarket and are made for convenience. Dry Filters are typically made with two different filter medias. Some use a dry synthetic filter media, and others use a paper style filter, much like the OEM. Dry Filters have become very popular because they don’t require filter oil which makes them easier to clean and maintain.
Oiled Filters are constructed from a cotton-gauze material that is coated with a thin layer of oil to help catch contaminants and debris. Oiled Performance Filters date back to the late 1960's and have the advantage of being washable and reusable. No matter which filter you choose, either is sure to provide your engine with excellent filtration and improved airflow.
OPEN VS ENCLOSED AIR BOX
The two common designs of Cold Air Intake Systems are open and enclosed intakes. The debate between open and enclosed air intake systems has been a hot topic between enthusiasts for years. Boxed, enclosed, or sealed air intake systems feature a large air box that surrounds the air filter and is designed to block out warm air from the engine compartment. Typically constructed from high quality materials, the air box is designed to fit in the factory location and supplies an added layer of protection from mud and debris.
An open air intake system does not include an airbox but may include an open heat shield that surrounds the air filter. There are many schools of thought on this and each person has their preference of which they feel is best. Some feel that separating the under-hood air gives the engine colder air while others think it makes no difference and prefer the largest filter for the most air.
Cleanable Filters
One of the biggest benefits of a Cold Air Intake System is the ability to wash and re-use the air filter. Almost all traditional oiled-style performance filters are able to be cleaned with mild household detergents or by using a cleaning kit offered by the manufacturer of your intake system. After the filter is cleaned and dried, it must be re-oiled before use.
Because dry filters materials vary, the cleaning process isn't always the same. In most cases, dry filters can be cleaned with mild household detergents and re-installed once dried. If the filter features a paper construction, they are typically disposable and the life can be extended by cleaning with a vacuum or tapping out the loose debris. Because air filters vary, it's always best to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for proper cleaning of your air filter.
PRE-FILTERS
Pre-filters are designed to extend cleaning intervals by protecting your air filter from large debris. Made from a breathable, hydrophobic material (a fancy way of saying it repels water), a Pre-Filter simply installs over your existing Air Filter. The added layer is there as extra protection to keep bugs, mud, leaves, and other debris from collecting on your Air Filter. As a result, you get a filter that’s easier to clean with longer intervals between cleanings. Most air intake manufacturers offer these as an add-on for your intake system. They are an easy and cost-effective way to get the most life out of your air filter.
