Due to current industry supply constraints Allison has made a temporary change to the color used to coat the external shell of this filter. A black paint is being used in substitution of the standard red paint. Please note you may receive a black or red spin-on filter. These filters are the same, just a different color.
Q: How often do you need to change the spin-on filter on an Allison 1000 Transmission?
The general guideline for changing the spin-on filter according to the Duramax diesel supplement is:- Every 45,000 miles for Normal & Severe Duty Usage.
There are owners/enthusiasts who prefer to change the filter more often than these guidelines, for added peace of mind and to ensure maximum transmission longevity.
Q: How Do I Replace The Allison Spin-On Filter?
The external spin-on filter (also known as the control main filter) is located under the truck on the driver side of the transmission. Use a filter wrench and begin turning the filter counterclockwise until it is loose enough to spin by hand. When the gasket seal breaks, it will start to leak fluid, so make sure there is a drain pan or catch positioned underneath.
With the filter removed, locate the filter magnet. It may be attached to the top of the filter or still present on the transmission. This magnet can be reused; just give it a good cleaning with a clean rag and brake cleaner solvent to remove all fluid and debris before reusing. If the magnet is not present, use Allison part number 29535617. Re-insert the magnet back on the transmission.
Using some clean transmission fluid on your finger, lubricate the rubber seal on the new filter. Make sure the sealing flange on the transmission is clean as well. Install the filter and hand-tighten. Finally, wipe the filter and the surrounding area clean.
Start the truck and make sure it has transmission fluid on the dipstick. Do not be concerned with the level yet. The transmission needs to be at operating temperature to make an accurate check. Take a short 3-5 mile ride and check the fluid level. The fluid level should be at the lower end of the hot range on the dipstick. Typical fluid loss for the filter change on an Allison 1000/2000 transmission is 1 pint (0.47 liters). Top off transmission fluid as necessary with Allison TES 668 or an approved transmission fluid for your model year.
Q: Do I need to use the Allison Transmission Filter Magnet?
Yes,
the spin-filter magnet helps catch any loose metal debris before it can
cause significant damage. If you replace the transmission filter and
the magnet is not present (or gets misplaced during the filter change),
use Allison 29535617 Spin-On Filter Magnet. If the existing magnet is
present, simply wipe it down, clean off all fluid & debris, and
reinstall when the new filter is installed.
