Diesel Exhaust Tips for Pickup Trucks: Finishes, Sizes, and Designs Explained

Diesel exhaust tips are an easy upgrade you can make to improve the appearance of your truck while protecting and enhancing the end of your exhaust system. Whether you drive a Ford F-250/350/450/550 Super Duty, a Chevy Silverado 1500,2500HD/3500HD, a GMC Sierra 1500, 2500HD, 3500HD, or Dodge/RAM 1500, 2500, or 3500 Pickup, a quality diesel exhaust tip adds a clean, aggressive finishing touch to the exhaust system. For most diesel truck owners, exhaust tips are primarily about appearance, durability, and proper fitment. Below is a breakdown of the most common finishes, inlet and outlet sizes, single vs dual wall designs, and how to properly measure your truck for the correct tip.

    Common Diesel Exhaust Tip Finishes

The finish of a diesel exhaust tip determines both its appearance and how well it holds up to soot, road salt, and harsh weather conditions.

    Polished Stainless Steel

Polished stainless steel is one of the most popular finishes for diesel trucks. It delivers a bright, mirror-like shine similar to chrome, but without the rust issues that can occur with plated steel. High-quality diesel exhaust tips are typically made from 304 stainless steel, which provides excellent resistance to corrosion and heat.

    Features:
    • Timeless Look
    • Mirror-Like Shine
    • Strong Corrosion Resistance
    • Long Lifespan in Harsh Climates
    • Easy to Polish and Maintain
This finish is ideal for truck owners who want a clean, show-quality appearance.

    Black Powder-Coat

Black exhaust tips have become extremely popular on modern diesel pickups, especially trucks with blackout appearance packages. These tips are typically constructed from stainless steel and then coated with a high-temperature black powder coat.

    Features:
    • Aggressive, Modern Styling
    • Matches Black Wheels, Bumpers, and Trim
    • Soot Buildup is Less Visible
Lower-quality coatings can eventually fade or chip, but well-manufactured powder-coated tips hold up well to normal diesel exhaust temperatures.

    Common Diesel Exhaust Tip Sizes

The most important measurement when choosing a diesel exhaust tip is the inlet diameter, which must match the outer diameter of your truck’s tailpipe. Diesel pickups typically run larger exhaust systems than gas-powered trucks. The outlet is on the other end of the tip (the end you will see when installed). Many truck owners choose larger outlets for a more aggressive appearance.Keep in mind that outlet size is all subject to personal preference.

Inlet Sizes - Typical diesel exhaust tip inlet sizes include:

    • 4-inch inlet – Some factory and many aftermarket diesel exhaust systems
    • 5-inch inlet – Popular aftermarket exhaust upgrades
A 4-inch inlet tip is the most common size for many diesel pickups.

Outlet Sizes - Common outlet sizes include:

    • 5-inch outlet – Slightly larger than stock
    • 6-inch outlet – One of the most popular sizes
    • 7-inch outlet – Aggressive lifted truck style
    • 8-inch outlet – Large custom or show-truck builds
A common configuratuon is a 4-inch inlet to 6-inch outlet tip, which fits some factory exhaust systems while providing a larger visual presence.

Single Wall vs Dual Wall Diesel Exhaust Tips

Exhaust tips are typically built using either single-wall or dual-wall construction.

    Single Wall Exhaust Tips

Single-wall tips use one layer of metal and in many cases have a rolled end which forms the edge of the tip.

    Pros:
    • Lower Cost
    • Lightweight Construction
    • Simple Design
    Cons:
    • Thinner Edge Appearance
    • Heat Discoloration Can be More Visible

    Dual Wall Exhaust Tips

Dual-wall exhaust tips use two layers of metal at the outlet edge. This creates a thicker lip that looks more substantial and helps hide heat discoloration.

    Pros:
    • Thick, Premium "Slanted" Edge
    • More Durable Design/Appearance
    • Less Visible Heat Staining
    Cons:
    • Slightly Higher Cost
    • Heavier Construction
Many high-end diesel exhaust tips feature dual-wall polished stainless-steel designs for a more finished appearance.

How to Measure Your Diesel Exhaust Pipe for a Tip

Before purchasing an exhaust tip, it’s important to measure your existing exhaust pipe to get the proper fitment.

    Step-by-Step Measurement

    1. Measure the outside diameter of your tailpipe. Use a tape measure or calipers to measure across the outside of the exhaust pipe.
    2. Match the measurement to the inlet size of the tip. The inlet size of the exhaust tip should match the outside diameter of your pipe.
    3. Choose your outlet size based on appearance. The outlet size does not affect fitment, it simply determines how large the visible opening will be.

Example: If your tailpipe measures 4 inches across, you will need a 4-inch inlet exhaust tip. From there you could choose something like:
    • 4" inlet → 5" outlet
    • 4" inlet → 6" outlet
    • 4" inlet → 7" outlet
    • 4" inlet → 8" outlet
Many diesel truck owners choose 6-inch outlets for a balanced aggressive look.

Choosing the Right Diesel Exhaust Tip

When selecting the right exhaust tip for your truck, focus on three key factors:
    1. Correct inlet size to match your tailpipe.
    2. Finish type that fits your truck’s style and environment.
    3. Single or dual-wall design based on the look you prefer
A properly chosen diesel exhaust tip can dramatically improve the appearance of your truck’s exhaust while offering long-lasting durability. With the right size and finish, it’s a simple upgrade that can give your diesel pickup a more aggressive and finished look.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do Exhaust Tips Change the Sound of My Diesel Truck?

In most cases, exhaust tips do not make a significant change to overall exhaust sound. Their primary purpose is to improve appearance and protect the end of the tailpipe. However, some customers do notice slight changes in tone. This is typically due to the size, shape, and design of the tip, which can subtly redirect or amplify certain sound frequencies. Any noise change from an exhaust tip alone is usually minor compared to upgrades such as installing a performance muffler.

Will an Exhaust Tip Prevent Rust on My Tailpipe?

A stainless-steel exhaust tip can help protect the exposed end of the tailpipe from corrosion, especially in areas with road salt or moisture. It also helps cover up existing rust or discoloration, giving the truck a cleaner, more finished, and custom look. While an exhaust tip won’t stop rust from forming elsewhere in the exhaust system, it does provide added durability and cosmetic improvement at the tailpipe exit.
