1994-1997 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Fuel System
Released in 1994, and running through 1997 in the Ford OBS (Old Body Style) trucks, the 7.3 Powerstroke allowed Ford to bring a fuel system with Hydraulically Actuated, Electronically Controlled Unit (HEUI) fuel injectors to the light duty diesel market. The innovative HEUI fuel injection system used an High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) with Injection Control Pressure (ICP) regulated by an Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR). It was controlled by the PCM and featured an Injector Driver Module (IDM) for the fuel injectors.
Instead of using a conventional fuel injection pump, the 7.3 Powerstroke instead utilized high-pressure engine oil to push the fuel out of the injector nozzle. Ford was one of the first to offer nearly infinitely variable injection timing, injection pressure control, with electronically controlled injector duration, using PCM programming that was cutting edge at the time.
