New for 1999, and running through early 2003, Ford updated the fuel system in the 7.3 Powerstroke by improving some mechanical and electrical components. Instead of using a conventional fuel injection pump, the 7.3 utilized a Hydraulically Actuated, Electronically Controlled, Unit Injector (HEUI) fuel system. This HEUI ‘oil over fuel’ hydraulic injection system allowed for a multiplication of pressures internal to the fuel injector effectively taking 3,000psi of High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) oil and generating over 20,000psi fuel pressure at the injector nozzle, all done while only needing 65psi of fuel from the frame mounted electric fuel pump.   

Functionally, the low pressure 65psi fuel pump would refill each injector in between injection events, and once the injector solenoid was energized by the Injector Driver Module (IDM) signal, a poppet valve lifts inside the injector, allowing the ‘high pressure’ oil (from the HPOP) to push the fuel out of the injector nozzle. The updated 7.3 also utilized a steeper angle swash plate inside the HPOP (now 17-degree vs a 15-degree angle in 1994-1997), and a redesigned Injector Driver Module (IDM).
