Released in 2003, the all-new 6.0 Powerstroke allowed Ford to update the fuel injection system beyond the previous system used in the 7.3.  They still utilized a Hydraulically Actuated, Electronically Controlled, Unit Injector (HEIU) fuel system, but redesigned many of the mechanical and electrical components in the system.  

The HEUI ‘oil over fuel’ hydraulic injection system allowed for a multiplication of pressures internal to the fuel injector; effectively taking 3,500psi of High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) oil and generating over 20,000psi fuel pressure at the injector nozzle. All done while only needing 65psi of fuel from the frame mounted electric fuel pump. Functionally, the low pressure 65psi fuel pump refills each injector in between injection events, and the once an injector solenoid is energized by the FICM signal, a spool valve shuttles horizontally inside the injector, allowing high-pressure oil (from the HPOP) to push the fuel out of the injector nozzle.  

In addition to the HPOP, the 6.0 fuel system now featured a Fuel Injector Control Module (FICM), a new Electronic Control Module (ECM) offering more parameters for more power, drivability, and tune-ability than previous era components. In addition to the 135cc fuel injectors, this worked together to deliver a more powerful and reliable package for Ford’s Super Duty trucks.
