2017-2024 Ford 6.7 Powerstroke Fuel System
The 2017-2024 Ford 6.7 Powerstroke diesel sourced many of its fuel injection system components and control technology directly from Bosch. This common rail injection system basically consisted of a low-pressure fuel system, and a high-pressure fuel system. The low-pressure side simply filters and transfers fuel from the tank to the injection pump, effectively keeping the injection pump lubricated and primed with fuel. The high-pressure side is what is delivered fuel to the rails and injectors.
CP4 vs CP4.2
While a Bosch CP4 pump does exist, it was only ever used in smaller displacement European diesel engines. So if you see terminology on the XDP or other websites referencing a CP4, it’s almost certainly a CP4.2, particularly if you when researching parts for Powerstroke, Duramax, or Dodge Ram engines.
The main difference between the CP4 and a CP4.2 is the number of plungers inside. The CP4 featured one internal plunger and the CP4.2 has two internal plungers. The CP4.2 can deliver significantly more fuel volume, allowing it to support a larger number of injectors at higher pressure than previous generation pumps. Now capable of pressures approaching 35,000psi in certain conditions, the Bosch CP4.2 delivers this fuel to two fuel rails, one per bank of injectors. From the rail, the fuel is plumbed to each injector through individual fuel lines, where the fuel waits for an electronic signal to ‘open’ the injector and inject fuel into the cylinder.
The vehicle Engine Control Module (ECM) regulates the pump rail pressure by modulating opening/closing, with regulators and actuators located on the pump and on the rail. Any excess fuel volume is returned back to the fuel tank. Regardless of the application or name, rest assured that all common rail injection pumps have extremely precise internal tolerances and can be susceptible to damage if not provided with ample, well filtered, diesel fuel containing few contaminants. With each new iteration, the 6.7L Powerstroke, and its updated injection system has given Ford 6.7L Powerstroke enthusiasts more confidence, performance, and reliability than previous fuel systems, and the control systems within the ECM can now deliver significant power while metering the fuel more precisely than ever.
Whether you are looking to perform routine maintenance with a Motorcraft fuel filter, repair your fuel system with an XDP, Industrial Injection, or Alliant Fuel Contamination kit, or improve your fuel system with an upgraded Lift Pump, or step-up performance and reliability with a CP4 to DCR Conversion or a Disaster Kit, XDP has your 6.7 Power Stroke Fuel System covered.
