Generally found in early model applications, mechanical fan clutches are driven by viscous oil that engages the fan when the engine rotates. Fan blades are attached to the fan clutch to draw air across the condenser and radiator.

Some late-model vehicles feature an electric fan clutch that is controlled by a transducer. A transducer, generally located in the discharge line, reports A/C head pressure to the ECU. The ECU uses this information to turn on/off the electric fan clutch and fan assembly. In some cases, what appears to be a failed electric fan clutch is rather a failed transducer. On systems with an electric fan clutch, check the transducer before replacing the fan clutch and/or fan assembly.
