In 2005 Jeep launched the diesel-powered Liberty, their first vehicle in the North American market with a diesel engine since 1987. The 2.8L CRD was manufactured by VM Motori in Cento, Italy for European vehicles. VM Motori designed this engine with similar characteristics found in heavy-duty diesel applications. The 2.8L CRD engine delivered superior fuel economy compared to gasoline engine options. This engine delivered up to 26mpg on the highway while the gas engines offered 20mpg.
The 2.8L CRD was constructed with a cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder head for a durable foundation. The cylinder head featured a 16-valve dual overhead camshaft design. This engine utilized a common-rail fuel system capable of producing 23,000 PSI of rail pressure for optimal engine efficiency. This high-pressure fuel system was powered by a Bosch injection pump and piezo-electric fuel injectors. Similar to most diesel engines at the time, the 2.8L CRD was fitted with a Garrett variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT).
A stock diesel-powered Jeep Liberty was rated at 160 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Paired with the 2.8L CRD engine was a Chrysler 545RFE 5-speed automatic transmission. The 2.8L CRD was discontinued after the 2006 model year. XDP carries a large selection of parts for the Jeep 2.8L CRD engine.
