In 2016 Nissan partnered with Cummins to release the 5.0L Cummins-powered Titan XD. This truck was the first diesel pickup Nissan produced in the USA and was designed to bridge the gap between 1/2-Ton and 3/4-Ton pickup trucks. Prior to the launch of this emissions-friendly and powerful diesel pickup, the Titan trucks were only equipped with gas-powered V8 engines. This brand-new 5.0L Cummins engine provided the Titan XD with superior performance and clean diesel emissions. Utilizing a high-performance turbocharger and a common-rail fuel system to improve horsepower and torque output in the 5.0L Cummins ensured the Titan would stand out from the competition. Typically, Cummins diesel engines employ an inline 6-cylinder design, but the 5.0L Cummins has a 90-degree V8 design. Although the Titan XD has a different engine configuration, it shares many features with the Cummins diesel engine in Ram trucks including engine block material, fuel system components, and emissions control systems.

The 5.0L Cummins utilizes a dual overhead camshaft design with 4 valves per cylinder for a total of 32 valves. The compacted graphite iron block, aluminum alloy cylinder heads, and composite valve covers provide maximum durability and weight reduction. The combination of these features helps to significantly reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. Similar to the Cummins-powered Ram trucks, the 5.0L Cummins uses a high-pressure common-rail fuel system. This system is powered by a Bosch CP4.2 injection pump that generates up to 29,000 PSI of fuel rail pressure. Paired with this injection pump are piezo-electric fuel injectors that produce up to 7 injection events per stroke. Cummins added a 2-stage filtration system to help protect the Bosch CP4.2 injection pump, as it has been known to be susceptible to damage from poor quality fuel. To enhance cold weather engine performance, the 5.0L Cummins uses maintenance-free ceramic glow plugs that are designed to last the life of the engine. Fitted to this engine is the Holset M2 twin-sequential turbocharger that is made up of two separate turbochargers. The smaller turbocharger provides better throttle response and acceleration, and the larger turbocharger boosts performance at higher speeds and under heavy loads. A rotary valve regulates the exhaust flow rate between the turbochargers to improve performance and reduce emissions.

The Cummins-powered Titan XD integrated multiple emissions control systems to produce near-zero nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. The combination of a cooled EGR system and diesel particulate filter system help reduce emissions and prevent soot from escaping through the tailpipe. The selective catalytic reduction system uses DEF fluid to convert nitrous oxide into water and nitrogen to provide the 5.0L Cummins better fuel economy and lower emissions. The Nissan Titan XD with a 5.0L Cummins was paired with the Aisin A466ND 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission shares many components and performance features with the Aisin transmission found in the Ram 3500 high output trucks. From 2016-2019 a stock 5.0L V8 Cummins was rated at 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque and a maximum towing capacity of 12,710 lbs. After the 2019 production year Nissan discontinued the use of the 5.0L Cummins in the Titan XD trucks.
