1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 Transfer Case
A Transfer Case is a fundamental part of the 4WD drive system on
your 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500/3500. The Dodge Ram 5.9 diesel trucks
came equipped from the factory with a New Venture
NV241 transfer case (also known as a New Process NP241). If you've ever gotten stuck and needed 4-wheel drive, then a transfer case is what helped get you out. It is responsible for transferring power to the front wheels and rear wheels in 4-wheel drive systems. Transfers cases typically have two 4-wheel drive settings, a high and low gear ratio for different situations. Bolted to the back of the transmission, a transfer case has two driveshafts connected to it that run to each axle. Contained inside the transfer case is a set of gears and chains that are engaged or disengaged depending on the drive mode selected. 4-wheel low is for low-speed situations where maximum torque is required such as driving up a steep rocky hill or pulling out a stuck vehicle.
The Transfer Case is designed to be used in off-road or low-traction situations and is not recommended to be used on dry pavement where wheel slip is not possible. When you shift the Transfer Case into 4-wheel drive, it locks the front
and rear axles together so that they spin at the same speed. When engaged in 4-wheel drive the transfer case and drivetrain need some wheel slip to prevent binding or damage. A transfercase typically does not require internal upgrades or
modification unless the vehicle will be used for extreme off-roading or
racing applications. External upgrades such as transfer case braces are offered for certain applications that add structural rigidity to prevent damage from high torque loads and twisting. Shop XDP's large selection of Dodge Ram Transfer Case products from the
