After a 6 year hiatus, Jeep reintroduced a 6-cylinder diesel engine in the Grand Cherokee for the 2014 model year. Instead of a Mercedes engine, Jeep used the same EcoDiesel that was offered in the Ram 1500 pickup. The 3.0L EcoDiesel was manufactured by VM Motori, an Italian motor company. This engine was originally built in 2011 for the European market, and then it was revised to meet the strict emission standards of the North American market. Employing the EcoDiesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee allowed for superior fuel economy during normal driving conditions and while towing. This 3.0L V6 was built with the same block material, fuel system components, and emission control systems as other diesel engines in 3/4-ton and 1-ton applications.
The EcoDiesel had a sturdy foundation of a compacted graphite iron (CGI) block with heat-treated aluminum cylinder heads that provided weight reduction and reliability. For additional durability the rotating assembly of this engine contained cast-aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods. To reduce fuel consumption and emissions this engine employed a common-rail fuel system that produced 29,000 PSI of rail pressure. This high-pressure fuel system was driven by a Bosch CP4.2 injection pump and solenoid-style injectors that allowed for 8 injection events per cycle. To improve low-end torque and reduce emissions a water-cooled Garrett 2056 variable-geometry turbocharger was paired to the EcoDiesel. The 3.0L EcoDiesel met the EPA emission regulations by integrating the same emissions control systems as all modern diesel engines. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system lowered NOx emissions by sending exhaust gas back into the engine. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) trapped and burned off excess soot. A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system injected diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) directly into the exhaust stream for reduced particulate matter emission.
To achieve a combination of excellent fuel efficiency and power, adding a diesel engine to the Jeep Grand Cherokee was the solution. Diesel engines could maintain peak torque throughout the RPM range which delivered better fuel economy and drivability while towing. The 3.0L EcoDiesel provided up to 30 mpg on the highway while gas engines could only offer mileage in the lower 20's. The Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0L EcoDiesel was rated at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque and had a towing capacity of 7,400 lbs. from the factory. Coupled with the EcoDiesel was a TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. In 2019 the EcoDiesel engine option was discontinued in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Luckily parts for the 3.0L EcoDiesel are still easily accessible. XDP continues to work with aftermarket manufacturers to provide everything your 3.0L EcoDiesel Jeep Grand Cherokee needs.
