Steering Boxes

Made as a direct-fit replacement, each RedHead Steering Box is remanufactured to install with minimal or no modifications. Common items such as a cast top cover, bigger control valves, and big-rig style bearings are installed by Red-Head to provide you with a steering gear you can trust! Each Red Head steering box undergoes an extensive remanufacturing process for added strength, reliability, and performance. For instance, on many steering gears, their technicians machine the factory housing to install needle bearings in the OEM housing. All sealing surfaces are polished to a precise degree and the sector shaft Is checked on a lather to ensure it’s straight and true. Then, the technicians flame-spray or replace the shafts as needed and install new control valves on some applications. To complete the process, RedHead technicians custom-fit each worm & piston assembly with precisely engineered, custom-made oversized ball bearings. Depending on the application, different steering ratios and spline counts are offered to provide a greater range of coverage.

After the steering box is installed, it is important to bleed the steering bear box system to get the trapped air out of the lines and pump. This can be accomplished by filling the reservoir and raising the front of the vehicle off the ground. Without starting the vehicle, work the steering wheel from full lock to full lock about 15-20 times, and leave the vehicle in the air for another 2 hours at minimum. After the allotted time, turn the wheel lock to lock another 7-10 times and top off if needed. Start the vehicle and check to see if the fluid level drops. If this happens, refill the reservoir as needed.
