Polymer Coated Bearings

Increasing bearing loads on modern engines such as downsizing, turbocharging, and stop/start functions puts greater focus on load capacity, wear, and seizure resistance. To combat additional engine bearing wear, Clevite engineers developed a proprietary polymer coating that is available for the aftermarket!
 
To counteract this increased wear and associated failure of the bearing, Clevite has applied an exclusive polymer lubricant layer. This layer is made up of a high-performance polyamide-imide, a solid lubricant, and metal particles, to the running surface of the bearing. This combination delivers excellent mechanical strength and tremendous thermal and chemical resistance. This polymer coating protects the bearing shells from direct metal-on-metal contact. Evenly distributed metallic grains, aligned in the running direction on the surface, provide excellent wear resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity.
 
Tribological testing that analyzes friction, wear, and lubrication has shown that coated bearings are over 15 times more wear-resistant than uncoated bearings. This is a substantial improvement that contributes to engine designs that are engineered to reduce consumption and emissions without increasing wear.
