Replace the worn steering gear in your Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the XDP Stock+ Power Steering Gearbox (New) XD746. The most common cause of a failing steering gearbox (also known as a
steering gear or steering box) is long-term wear and tear. Over time,
internal components such as the worm gear, sector gear, and bearings can
wear down or get damaged. Other contributing factors may include rough
road conditions, potholes, and fluid leaks.

Symptoms
of a worn steering gearbox include a leaking sector shaft seal,
excessive play in the steering wheel (loose or unresponsive steering),
or the vehicle wandering or pulling while driving. Other signs to watch
for are difficulty turning, leaking fluid, a stiff steering wheel, and
grinding or clunking noises coming from the steering system. As the
condition worsens, you may also notice that more effort is required to
steer, especially at lower speeds or when maneuvering.

I bought this as a replacement for my 07’ sierra classic. My old gearbox had over 200,000 miles on it and had a ton of play. After some research I chose to go with the XDP box. After seeing reviews on some of the reman boxes, brand new was the way to go. Box went in and fit perfectly, just as good as original. I would recommend buying a new pitman arm with the box however. Since putting the new box in, the truck has been used hard and put away wet without any issues. Steering feels like brand new. No shakes, binds, or any sort of play.

I’m wondering if it’s already centered, or if I have to find the center?
You will have to find the center of the XDP Stock+ Power Steering Gearbox (New) XD746 as it might have shifted during shipping. To find the center, rotate the input shaft counterclockwise using a sufficient tool until it no longer turns. (DO NOT use excessive force). Then rotate the input shaft clockwise and count the total turns until it stops. On average, this will be about 3 to 4 turns. Take the total number of turns you have and divide that number by 2. Turn the input shaft the determined number of turns back counterclockwise. For example, if you have 3 and 1/4 total turns, your amount would be 1 and 5/8 turns. You have now centered the steering gear.
