The Banks Power 35135-B CoolRunner Engine Oil Pan will help extend the life of the motor oil in your 2017-2019 GM 6.6L Duramax L5P. The Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan employs technology derived from their military engine program to enhance oil longevity. This system effectively rejects more heat and minimizes aeration compared to stock options and competitors. It includes two extra quarts of oil, and the Banks FlowThru Fins contribute to improved cooling. Unlike the stock design, the CoolRunner facilitates complete fluid drainage during oil changes.
Engineered to Cool Motor Oil
The Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan for the 2017-2019 Duramax demonstrates superior performance and cooling capabilities. It incorporates 19 deep-cut external radiator fins, which increase the surface area exposed to cool air beneath the truck. The die-cast manufacturing process yields a smoother interior surface, thereby enhancing oil flow to the pickup tube and drain. An engineered anti-cavitation dimple surrounds the oil pickup, facilitating improved oil flow to the pump by minimizing restrictions at the filter inlet. Additionally, the pan features 15 internal fins that effectively absorb more heat from the oil than both the stock pan and any other aftermarket options.
Banks proprietary FlowThru Fins optimize thermal energy transfer by aligning internal and external features. Engine heat is effectively extracted from the sump, where the hottest oil accumulates. Cooler oil maintains the appropriate viscosity. This ensures that metal-on-metal surfaces receive adequate lubrication. Increased internal heat absorption surface area enhances the motor oil's performance. Additionally, a greater external heat radiation surface area contributes to maintaining the oil within its optimal operating temperature. This practice prevents oxidation or breakdown, even when the vehicle is hauling a heavy load uphill.
Oil Flow Improvements
The CoolRunner oil pan includes a 1/8" NPT port to accommodate an auxiliary temperature sensor. It has the capacity to hold two additional quarts of oil compared to the stock version. Furthermore, it enables a complete oil drain, eliminating the sludge that typically remains in the stock pan. The CoolRunner's deep fins effectively guide fluid to the oil pickup. A distinctive anti-cavitation dimple is located beneath the oil pickup tube, which smoothly redirects the oil flow upwards. The integration of both the internal cooling fins and the dimple mitigates windage, a common issue in other aftermarket designs. This engineering enhances the oil's service life.
The factory pan features a drain plug that is threaded into a welded bung extending inward. This design prevents complete oil drainage, as oil is blocked from fully exiting when it reaches the top of the threaded bung. In contrast, the CoolRunner employs a flush-mounted, downward-facing drain plug that includes a face-sealing O-ring. This configuration permits full drainage during an oil change. A high static oil level creates pressure on the pickup tube inlet. This pressure prevents oil from escaping during an oil change. As a result, nearly half a quart of liquid sandpaper remains in the engine. The Banks oil pan is designed to allow complete drainage of every drop of fluid. This design also enables the pickup tube to drain fully.
Sealing Enhancements
Duramax oil pans use an RTV-style liquid gasket that must fully seal to prevent leaks. Poorly designed pans with an improper sealing surface can result in leaks or damage from strands of RTV falling in, clogging the oil pickup tube, or jamming the pump. Learning from decades of reliable military development, the CoolRunner uses an OE-style full-length squeeze gap that runs the entire inner perimeter of the pan. This precision-machined feature prevents small RTV strands from breaking off, falling into the sump, and damaging your engine.
Die-Cast vs Sandcast
Unlike competition, every Banks' lubricant cooling products are die-cast rather than sand-cast. Compared to sand-cast parts, a die-cast part is smoother, denser, and nearly porosity-as it has a much higher level of precision. Even the sand used to make the parts can get stuck in sand-cast components. Sand shouldn't be in your engine oil. Finally, only a die-cast process enables Banks to create the long, thin cooling fins. Banks believes that this technique is worthwhile despite its higher cost.
