1999-2003 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Injectors
Find the fuel injectors you need to repair your 1999-2003 Ford Super Duty F‑250, F‑350, F‑450, F‑550, and Excursion equipped with a 7.3L Powerstroke. While many say the 7.3L Powerstroke has reached legendary status for reliability, fuel injectors are a wear item and, in most cases, will require replacement as mileage accumulates. Hard starting, rough idle, loss of power, and excessive smoke can all be signs that your fuel injectors are nearing the end of their service life.
Whether you’re looking to replace a single HEUI injector (Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector) or the whole set of eight, here are a few things you should know:
7.3L Powerstroke Fuel Injector Codes:
Fuel injectors in the 7.3L Powerstroke are identified by two-letter injector codes. Each code corresponds to specific fitment requirements and operating behavior. Typical injector codes found in 1999-2003 engines are:
- AD - Standard for 1999.5-2003 models
- AE - Long lead injector for cylinder #8 for 1999.5-2003 models (fix for “cackle” issue)
- AB - Standard for early 1999 (pre‑12/7/1998) and 1997 California emissions models
Injector Cackle & Ford TSB Information
For the 1999-2000 production years, Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) addressing a common issue known as “injector cackle” a loud knocking or clattering noise above the normal sound of diesel combustion. This noise may sound like a rod knock but is intermittent and increases in intensity as the engine warms up to operating temperature.(1)
To remedy this issue, Ford recommended a specific injector configuration:
- Seven (7) AD injectors for cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
- One (1) AE injector (long lead) for cylinder 8
This combination was designed to reduce injector noise while maintaining proper fuel delivery and engine balance. When replacing fuel injectors, it’s important to note what configuration is currently installed to ensure optimal performance. Engine serial numbers (found on the lower left of the engine block, rearward of the oil filter) of 1311240 and higher were built with a long‑lead injector in cylinder 8 from the factory. For those unsure, the long‑lead injector can be visually identified by the “LL” stamp on the top of the solenoid.(1)
