Description

The Garrett 739619-5004S New Ball Bearing PowerMax GTP38R Turbocharger is a must-have for any 1999.5-2003 7.3L Powerstroke owner that wants to get more out of their truck. Built with the Garrett exclusive Ball Bearing Cartridge, the GTP38R provides unbeatable response, efficiency, and durability, especially at elevated boost levels. As a drop-in replacement, this turbocharger mounts to the factory pedestal and retains the use of OE intake and exhaust systems.

The GTP38R PowerMax features an 88mm compressor wheel that provides 33% more flow than the stock turbo. Also included is a ported shroud housing that improves compressor flow range and surge control. The included 1.00 A/R housing allows for free-flowing exhaust with reduced back pressure and can even reduce exhaust gas temperatures up to 200 degrees.

While this turbocharger is suitable as a replacement for factory equipment, it is recommended that additional fueling upgrades such as aftermarket tuning or injectors are installed or already in use. Includes turbo, 4 inlet hose, band clamp, oil inlet O-ring, oil outlet O-ring, & installation instructions. Fits F-250/350 & Excursion.

Features:
  • 88mm Comp. Wheel
  • Drop-In Replacement
  • 1.00 A/R Turbine Housing
  • 33% More Flow Than The Stock
  • Max Recommended Boost: 40 PSI
  • 1 Year Warranty

Note From Garrett Regarding Shaft Play:
When the Powermax turbo is new or has not operated for a long period of time allowing most of the oil to drain out, the rotating assembly will move more in the radial direction because there is no oil in the center housing. This condition is normal. As long as the shaft wheel spins freely and the wheels don't contact their respective housings, the assembly will function properly.

TURBO INSTALL AND REVIEW
5
Got this turbo about a week ago for my 2002 7.3. Called a great buddy of mine to come help me install my MBRP exhaust while I tackle the installation of this turbo. Installing went okay, getting them exhaust clamps off was a headache. Heads up you will need to remove the entire intake piping and valve cover hose to remove the turbo. I recommend having air tools or something similar when doing this project, makes life so much easier. When installing the new turbo, recommend resting the exhaust clamp for the rear Y pipe onto the turbo, will prevent multiple foreign words that I experienced. Take your time installing it to make sure you did not forget anything. Test Drive went awesome. Turbo has a nice shuttle whistle, nothing ears piercing but loud enough to make you smile. If you are looking for that whistle that can be heard from the moon, this is not the turbo for it. About a 75 percent change in power going up hills; truly a beast and great power for hills. Recommend this turbo upgrade if you looking for a work horse and not just a noise maker.

MONSTER UNDER THE HOOD
5
I'm a diesel technician, & a customer of mine blew 2 OEM turbos in 6 months (high EGT's). We decided there wasnt going to be a next time. We replace it with the POWERMAX UPGRADE the 3rd time. Here we are 3 years later & that turbo is still taking the ABUSE from him. When i broke the shaft on MY TURBO with BANKS KIT, (02 STROKE) THERE WAS NO OTHER OPTION. After installing this monster its like i had a new truck. Major torque increase & lower EGT's. I will from now on recommend only this turbo to anybody with turbo failure that doesnt want to take a chance in costly oem turbo failure. This will be more than likely the last turbo i will replace on my truck, because i no if it can handle wut that customer has put it through (1500 degrees), i will not have another turbo problem. This turbo is a must for EXTREME applications. So if you no any young people who are always standing on the accelerator, do them a favor & recommend this turbo. Because if they dont, they probably wont just be replacing the turbo, they will replace an engine as well. As a side note. This turbo is very noisy, sounds like a siren at lower boost but has a sweet sounding whistle at high boost. I also recommend a flash tuner that can clear DTC's on the fly, because with other mods you can expect a check engine light on heavy demand. i recommend the Edge evolution CS/CTS because when it detects an overboost with the Edge it doesnt go into a LIMP MODE. This is by far one of the best modification you can do to your powerstroke, i no it was for mine.

Questions and Answers

What would be the HP and TQ gain on a stock truck? 2003 7.3L Excursion
View Staff Answer
Answer

The GTP38R has proven itself over and over in everything from stock to highly modified engines. Keep in mind that installing a performance turbo on a stock truck will certainly offer gains, but not nearly the gains you’d see on a truck with supporting modification like programming, exhaust and intake.(You’re looking for the best fuel/ air ratio and increasing your air without the fuel will only offer you so much power.)

Will tubro work without the inlet hose?
View Staff Answer
Answer

The turbo includes a 4” inlet hose because your factory inlet hose will not work with the turbo.
