In the second quarter of the 2003 model year, Ford introduced the 6.0L Powerstroke to meet the requirements of stricter government emissions standards. Ford and International teamed up to produce this highly innovative and powerful engine with many new features designed to increase horsepower and torque in their Super-Duty pickups. Featuring improvements to the turbocharger and fuel injection system, the 6.0L Powerstroke proved to be a more powerful and emissions-friendly engine. Paired with a new automatic transmission and a heavy-duty Dana 60 Front Axle, the 2003-2007 model year Ford Super Duty Trucks offered increased towing capacity, horsepower and torque compared to previous models.

One of the major innovations of the 6.0L Powerstroke was the Variable Geometry Turbocharger which provided an increased throttle response. The VGT is designed so the housing's size can change depending on throttle position. At lower RPMs, the housing is more restrictive for better throttle response, and at higher RPMs the housing is less restrictive which allows for improved exhaust flow. Along with the upgraded turbo, Ford improved the fuel injectors for the 6.0L Powerstroke. The injectors in the 6.0L Powerstroke use a spool valve instead of the poppet valve used on previous engines. The spool valve allows for a higher oil pressure output of 3,600 PSI that creates a more efficient combustion process. With upgraded forged steel connecting rods and the addition of a bed plate, the 6.0L Powerstroke can handle higher power levels up to 800 hp.

From the factory, the 6.0L Powerstroke had power levels starting at 325 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque, which is a major improvement over the 290 hp of previous engines. With these increased power levels Ford paired the 6.0L Powerstroke with heavy-duty transmission options, the new 5R110W TorqShift Automatic Transmission or the ZF S6-650 6-Speed Manual Transmission. After the 2007 model year, Ford discontinued the use of the 6.0L Powerstroke in their Super-Duty pickups but the engine was still used in the Econoline Vans up until the 2010 model year.
