Description

The Banks Power 41890-D Ram-Air Intake System with Dry Filter offers the greatest air density of any intake system for your Ford F250/F350 6.7L Powerstroke. This cold air intake system is designed for maximum air density gain giving you more power and better mileage. Utilizing the stock airbox location, this intake retains the stock battery location while employing the down-facing inlet and factory hood scoop. This intake system offers a 40% increase in air density over the stock intake, resulting in greater horsepower, torque, and mileage gains. The 99% efficient filter included in this kit provides unparalleled dirt-holding capacity that translates to longer intervals and mileage between cleanings.

When Banks engineers designed the Ram-Air Intake, they had one seemingly impossible challenge: to achieve higher air density at the turbo inlet than the competition while keeping the filter housing in the factory location behind the battery. As Powerstroke owners know, the battery is placed near the front corner of the engine bay, meaning air must pass above and/or below the battery to the airbox behind it. One competitor chose to move the battery by having the installer attach a piece of supplied angle iron to the thin firewall, cantilevering it over the engine. In Banks opinion, the battery is way too heavy and poses a danger if it were to break loose and fall since a lot of trucks see off-road conditions. These challenges would set Banks’ mechanical engineers on a year-long mission of design, research, development, and on & off-road testing.

Air Density King
The Banks Ram-Air intake out-flows and out-performs the stock intake and competitor’s cold air intakes in the lab and on the street. A 49% gain in Mass Air Flow was reached on the flow bench, but perfect lab tests only tell half the story. Towing a heavy load during real-world drive testing, a true 40% increase vs factory in intake air density was measured. Consistent and reliable engine efficiency and power are the goals of the Banks Ram-Air. This requires a free-flowing low restriction intake that also decreases intake temperatures. Dense, cool, heavier air helps improve fuel economy and throttle response as your turbo works less hard under load to hit stock boost targets.

It Takes Two To Density
For a cold air intake to increase efficiency and power, you must lower the intake temperature and increase pressure at the turbo inlet. A low resistance intake might look impressive on a flow bench, but the hot under-hood temperature can kill the density gains. Conversely, if an intake or filter size is too restrictive and small, no amount of cold air will make up the difference in pressure loss. It takes both to improve air density, which is precisely what the Banks Ram-Air delivers, and the data doesn't lie.

A Big Filter — Engineered Right
Banks Big-Ass Filter can hold more dirt while being less restrictive with nearly 40% more filter surface area than the competition and a massive ob-round filter outlet that is 3x larger than competitors. That means you'll spend more time on the road driving and less time cleaning the air filter in your truck. The Big-Ass filter sits angled down in the air box to prevent dirt and debris from getting stuck in between the pleats. An exclusive integrated collar fits inside the Banks Inlet Tube to smoothly transition airflow from the air box to the turbo with the lowest amount of resistance and drag.

The Search For Cold Air
The Banks Power 41890-D Ram-Air Intake System with Dry Filter pulls in cool air from two key locations: the factory forward hood scoop and a down-facing inlet. So why not utilize a 3rd passenger side fender opening like the competition? Once the engine went up to operating temp, hood down, and on the road, testing revealed the side fender was a source of hot air upwards of 125 degrees F! Once the sensors were installed, testing began.

How Banks Tested
Banks utilized a stretch of the 57 freeway up a 2.5-mile grade to attain real-world data logs with the engine under load. Three separate 4th gear pulls from 40-65mph were logged for each system and averaged together to compare the change from ambient air conditions down to the compressor inlet. Air density is calculated with temperature, pressure, and humidity. And while flow is very important, you’ll often see a loss in horsepower if the system flows more hot air. The more the air density at the compressor inlet of cool dry air, the more efficient your engine will run as your turbo will work less to reach the same amount of boost. This can mean better fuel economy on the highway since you can maintain the same speed with less throttle input. You'll also have more reliable power under load when you need it as this intake maintains cool intake air temperatures during overtaking or towing.

The factory intake pulls air from a single location and directs it underneath the battery into the filter housing. There is an extra foam inlet facing the engine bay where some modest airflow happens, though this is more of a bypass in case the front duct gets blocked. The factory design is the most restrictive system from testing and was utilized as a baseline of comparison for intake air temperatures and pressure loss. This intake system draws air from two locations, the primary front scoop as well as a bottom opening towards the front of the truck. Tests were done to verify if running an extra fender inlet would increase performance, but this caused intake temps to rise reducing MAF. The under-battery scoop with a downward-facing air inlet lowered air restriction through the system without breathing in hot air. This cold air access with an under-battery scoop retained its cold temperature to the compressor inlet. Due to its low restriction and access to true cold air for minimal air-temperature increase, total MAF gain was 40% over the factory intake making it the air density king in 1st place.

Installation Tech Tip:
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor is mounted in the intake tube on the air intake system. You will need to remove this sensor during the installation of a cold air intake. While replacement of a good working MAF Sensor is not required, it is generally a good practice to inspect, clean, or replace the MAF Sensor during this installation.
