Understanding The 6.7L Powerstroke Fuel Filtration System
The fuel system for the 6.7L Powerstroke has a low-pressure (60-70 psi) fuel pump along with two independent fuel filter components. On the 2011-2016 trucks, the primary under-bed fuel filter is combined with the frame-mounted fuel pump assembly. In 2017, Ford moved the fuel pump to the fuel tank, with the under-bed filter mounted to the tank or frame rail, depending on bed length. Since 2011, all models have incorporated a secondary, under-hood filter that is mounted on the driver's side (left) valve cover.
Factory Filtration
Both the primary under-bed and secondary under-hood filters work together for water-coalescence and particle filtration, including filtration of the injector return fuel by the secondary filter. Ford Motorcraft markets these two filters as a pair, with a 5.1-micron rating and 98% efficiency. They do not publish the performance of each filter individually. When developing filtration kits for the 6.7L Powerstroke, Fleece separated the filters to independently verify the performance. Here are the findings:

Fleece Filtration
When developing a fuel filter kit for the 6.7L Powerstroke, Fleece worked with filter manufacturers to select filters that would perform on par with or better than the OEM units, and to provide a product that improves serviceability, availability, and durability. Beyond filtration capability, it is equally important to ensure proper flow rates and acceptable pressure drops are maintained in the filter selection. For consistency with OEM testing, performance data is reported at comparable efficiency and/or micron levels.
