Forged Steel Camshafts

The 178 steel cam in this kit is forged, not cut from bar stock, resulting in a denser, more uniform grain structure. A natural halo in grain structure forms on the outside of the cam during forging to add a layer of strength for increased service life.

DLC-Coated Tappets

Gas Carburized & Polished: Every tappet undergoes a precise hardening process that creates a stable, hardened base metal for the DLC coating. Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) Coating is an ultra-hard surface that dramatically lowers friction and wear, but proper operating conditions are vital for long service life. The DLC can be damaged by using the wrong oil, incorrect valve lash, valve float, excessive RPM, too-high spring pressure, or metal debris. Always use a high-quality 15W-40 oil (or 5W-40 in sub-zero temperatures) that contains a sufficient amount of zinc, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Low-additive or low- viscosity oils do not have the film strength required for flat tappet operation. Hamilton requires Schaeffer's 15W-40 and 5W-40 in sub-zero conditions.
