Common Questions

HOW DO I BLEED, OR PURGE AIR, FROM MY STEERING GEAR BOX SYSTEM?
1.    After installing the gearbox, fill the system with fluid.
2.    Raise the front wheels off the ground, do not start the vehicle.
3.    Work the steering wheel back and forth, lock to lock, 15-20 times.
4.    Leave the vehicle sit (overnight is best) at least 2 hours
5.    Top the pump reservoir off again.
6.    Work the steering wheel back and forth again 7-10 times
7.    Have a person in the vehicle and another at the pump reservoir with a container of fluid & funnel ready to pour if necessary.
8.    Instruct the person in the vehicle to start the engine. As soon as this happens, if the fluid level drops, be ready to pour in more fluid. The level must be kept at an almost full level or it will suck in air again.
9.    If this procedure is followed properly, the air problem will be solved.

WHAT POWER STEERING FLUID SHOULD I USE?
RedHead highly recommends using the same fluid that the manufacturer of your vehicle recommends. It is always best to use a name-brand fluid. Their power steering gears are tested under pressure with Dexron 3 ATF before they leave the factory. If you decide to change from what the manufacturer recommends then Dexron 3, or comparable fluid, is an acceptable alternative.

ARE REDHEAD GEARBOXES SENT OUT IN CENTER POSITION?
Yes, they are sent out on center.

Be prepared for it to cost about $100 to return core
Dj (Minnesota) | October 25th, 2025
Core is 275, and it just cost me $100 to ship it back. I'll never use XDP again.
Note From Store Owner: Thank you for your feedback. We understand that shipping costs for returning cores can be frustrating. Steering box
Jacob (CA) | August 20th, 2025
Second redhead box, first one failed around 1 1/2 years of use, slop and lower seal leaking. I figured I'd give them a second chance. New box is tight, and feels amazing. BUT, the box packaging was covered in oil, and somehow 2 of the 3 mounting bolt threads were messed up, and I had to buy a tap to clean them up. Found that out when trying to hold the box up and get the bolts started, then took it out and inspected the threads, after 15 minutes of not being able to get the bolts to catch. My take is, if this box fails in the same time frame, Ill buy else where, such as Blue Top, XDP, PSC. This box for now is good, just take this review with a grain of salt, as I am currently fairly happy with this steering box I got, but not so good past experiences.

Clean tight box. Has no leaks, it's what you should be able to get from any company but only a few care enough to do a good job.
