6.2L


In 1982 GMC and Chevrolet introduced the 6.2L V8 Detroit Diesel engine in the C/K 1500/2500/3500 pickups. This non-turbocharged diesel engine was also available in 1/2-ton applications including the Suburban and Blazer. The 6.2L was designed to provide a reliable and durable engine option for truck owners. GM produced this engine to be more fuel efficient compared to their gas-guzzling small-block and big-block V8 engines. The Detroit 6.2L diesel engine would also be found in a variety of military vehicles, from pickup trucks to Humvees.

The Detroit 6.2L diesel engine was constructed with a cast-iron block and cylinder heads to provide a solid foundation. This engine features an overhead valve design with 2 valves per cylinder, for a total of 16 valves. An indirect injection system was utilized on this engine, which required less fuel pressure than modern diesel injectors. The heart of this fuel system was the fully mechanical Stanadyne DB2 injection pump that had a maximum pressure of 6,700 PSI. The Detroit 6.2L engine was naturally aspirated and wasn't fitted with a turbocharger, which was a common configuration for many diesel engines of the time.

Initially the 6.2L diesel engine was rated at 130 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. The higher output 6.2L diesel engine built for the US Army was rated at 165 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. During its final production year, the Detroit 6.2L was rated at 143 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. There were three transmission options for this engine, the TH400 3-speed automatic, SM645 4-speed manual, or the NP833 4-speed manual overdrive transmission. By the end of 1993 the Detroit 6.2L V8 diesel engine was replaced by the Detroit 6.5L V8 diesel engine.
 

6.5L


In 1993 after the retirement of the Detroit 6.2L diesel engine, the Detroit 6.5L diesel engine was introduced in the GM C/K 1500/2500/3500 pickups. This engine was also available in 1/2-ton applications, and the US Army used this engine in military trucks and Humvees. After competing diesel manufacturers incorporated turbochargers and direct injection fuel systems to their diesel engines, Detroit Diesel included a new injection pump and added a turbocharger to the 6.5L V8 engine. This engine was designed to be the perfect balance of performance and fuel economy at the time.

Some key features of the 6.2L carried over to the new Detroit 6.5L engine, including the cast-iron block, cylinder heads and the overhead valve design with 2 valves per cylinder. The 6.5L engine also utilized an indirect injection fuel system with mechanical injectors. The Detroit 6.5L diesel received upgrades that would deliver better performance and fuel economy. The Stanadyne DB2 mechanical injection pump was part of the 6.5L fuel system until 1994 when it was replaced by the Stanadyne DS4 electronically controlled injection pump. This electronic pump helped create a more efficient combustion process by increasing fuel flow.

Fitted to the Detroit 6.5L engine was a Borg-Warner turbocharger, that significantly increased power. In 1993 this engine was rated at 180 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque, which was a major increase over the 130 hp in the 6.2L. By the end its production, the Detroit 6.5L was rated at 215 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. To handle the improved horsepower and torque this engine was mated with either the 4L80E 4-speed automatic transmission or the NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The use of the Detroit 6.5L diesel engine in Chevy and GMC trucks ended in 2000, but the components to preserve these engines are still readily available.
