XDP's HD Gear Reduction Starters are faster, stronger, and more durable than your factory starter. This gives you the ability to turn over even the most aggressive diesel engines.

XDP's HD Gear Reduction Starters feature a motor that is faster, more efficient, and draws less amperage. The Gear Reduction Design produces more torque than a factory unit and provides you with a fast and reliable start-up. Each starter comes pre-tested, ready for installation and features a durable "Wrinkle Black" finish for corrosion resistance and aesthetics.

Features:
  • HD Gear Reduction Design
  • Wrinkle Black Finish
  • Increased Durability
  • 1-Year Warranty
Specifications:
  • 4.0 HP
  • 3.0 KW
  • 275 Ft-Lbs. Torque
  • 4.75:1 Gear Reduction

Tech Notes:
Depending on the conditions, a starter can pull up to 500 amps. These levels of amperage stress ALL components in the circuit including cables, terminals, batteries, and more. Problems with these components can be difficult to diagnose as they appear fine at rest and under a light load, but generate high resistance under heavy amperage draws. This results in low voltage to the starter while cranking, causing heavier amperage draw, and increased heat leading to starter failure. Batteries, cables and additional components should be checked and serviced regularly. Voltage measured at the starter during cranking should always be above 11V DC. Starter heat shields are not required, but are an excellent idea for heat protection.

Starts the truck GREAT, But the pot metal casting for the nose section will shatter and cost you a lot of time and money if the timing is right.

So I’ve owned this starter for about 8 months. It has performed flawlessly. I recently did some upgrades to the truck and had a copper crush washer for injector #2 fail along with the O-ring above it. This happened to my wife 2 days after the upgrades, a big puff of white smoke truck dies. She tries to restart it and it will not turn over. Assume it’s Hydro-locked! Pull the injectors and glow plugs to drain it. Still won't turn over, Now it probably bent a connecting rod! Tear down the driver’s side of the motor to the block. Still won’t turn over. Pull Oil pan and bed pan. Everything looks Perfect. Now there was a little bluing on the main cap journal at Cylinders 6-7. Maybe a Bad Main bearing, that would be a really bad bearing with Zero signs to seize the motor. So figured I would have to Pull the motor and do a complete teardown. Started with this HEAVY DUTY Starter that has worked flawlessly up to this point, to find out the case around the starter gear had shattered and was now caught between the starter and flywheel holding the engine from moving in any direction. I have NEVER had a starter fail in this manner. I can't say I've ever known of anyone having basically a large piece of the housing around the nose of the starter break off. The indexing tip was still there, Just part of the housing around it broke off.
