Every year with the help of the reader’s votes, Diesel Power Magazine hosts the Diesel Power Challenge. A contest that has rapidly evolved over the years, it’s now become one of the most extreme diesel torture tests. With bragging rights on the line, only 1 of the 10 contestants will be crowned champion. To earn this title they must put their pride, truck, and skills on the line while trying to dominate the competition over 3 days and many events and obstacles.
Starting on day 1, the dyno competition kicks off the first of many intense events. Competitors will spin the rollers and put down unbelievable horsepower and torque numbers while testing the strength of their truck’s drivetrain, engine and the nerves of the competitor in the driver’s seat. With a lot of carnage and destruction in the past, it’s anyone’s guess on who comes out unscathed and can move on to the next event.
Day 2 is at the track! Bandimere Speedway to be exact; a track at elevation carved into the side of the Rockies that elevates these trucks far from sea level. This is where we can see what does and doesn’t perform at over 5,000 feet. Including drag racing, a trailer tow obstacle course and trailer tow drag race, it’s easy to see how this is yet another part of the grueling torture test that these trucks must endure.
The final day of the Diesel Power Challenge starts easy with mild competition in the fuel mileage test. After a scenic journey through the mountains these drivers will try to keep their foot off the pedal and shoot for the best mileage while driving at elevation. After the fill-up and fuel mileage calculations the contestants will spend their afternoon at the fairgrounds for the final event, the sled pull! After that, the stats are tallied and the winner will be announced!
With film crews present, the action kicks off on Tuesday May 6th and the cameras will roll until Thursday May 8th. Over the course of three days the events will be filmed at multiple locations in the greater Denver area.
