Description

The Mean Green 6600 Gear Reduction Starter is the answer to starter issues in your 2001-2019 GM 6.6L Duramax. The Mean Green Starter provides 100% more torque than an overweight stock starter. With a 4.4 to 1 gear reduction, roller bearing support, and an integrated solenoid, the Mean Green Starter can crank any engine no matter how high its static compression.

The Mean Green Starter's 3" tool steel driveshaft is supported at both ends by bearings. The stainless steel pinion shaft is externally splined to mate with the larger diameter, internally splined driveshaft. Even the armature in the high-speed motor is supported at each end with bearings. All totaled, there are five bearings in the motor and gear assembly.

  • Superior Design
  • Easy Installation
  • 1/3 Smaller Than Stock

Overpriced ,not worth additional money. Tried having replace under their warranty and they wouldn't even call me back.
SAME AS STOCK

I ORDERED ONE OF THESE STARTERS FOR MY 02 LB7 AFTER READING THE DESCRIPTION OF IT BEING 1/3 SMALLER AND 4.4 TO 1 GEAR REDUCTION WITH 100% MORE STARTING POWER OVER STOCK. WHEN I RECEIVED THE NEW STARTER MY FIRST IMPRESSION WAS THAT IT LOOKED THE SAME AS THE OLD ONE, WHEN I LAID THEM DOWN SIDE BY SIDE THERE IS NO DISCERNIBLE DIFFERENCE IN SIZE OR BUILD. SO I FIGURED THE DIFFERENCE MUST BE INTERNAL SO I DECIDED TO TAKE THEM BOTH APART. THE STOCK STARTER HAS AN 11 TOOTH GEAR DRIVING A 41 TOOTH GEAR TO THE OUTPUT GEAR AND THE MEAN GREEN HAS THE EXACT SAME DOWN TO THE FRACTION OF AN INCH IN TOOTH SIZE ETC. THIS ALSO MEANS THAT THE REAL RATIO IT 3.73 TO 1, NOT THE 4.4 TO 1 AS ADVERTIZED. THE WINDINGS IN THE MOTORS ARE THE SAME THE EMPIEDENCE THE NUMBER OF COILS THE SIZE OF WIRE THE WAY THE BRUSHES AND CAGE ARE BUILT ARE THE SAME THE STATOR AND WIRE GAUGE THE WAY THE WINDINGS ARE BUILT EVEN THE WAY THE WIRE IS FUSED TO THE SOLENOID AND THE HARDWARE IS THE SAME. SO JUST FOR FUN I ALSO WENT ON AMAZON AND PURCHASED A STOCK $85 STARTER JUST TO FIND IT TO ALSO BE IDENTICAL TO BOTH OF THE STARTERS. THE VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE OF PEOPLE SHOWING BEFORE AND AFTER STOCK STARTER AND MEAN GREEN STARTER ARE OF A TRUCK THAT NEEDS A NEW STARTER ALREADY WHICH IS WHY THEY ARE REPLACING IT AND A NEW STARTER MORE OR LESS A STOCK STARTER WITH A MEAN GREEN STICKER ON THE SIDE OF IT, SO OF COURSE A NEW STARTER IS GOING TO WORK BETTER

Questions and Answers

Will this fix starter grinding on my Duramax? My 2004 duramax has starter grinding. Replaced with Napa starter but still the same problem.
Will your after market starter solve this problem? Some forums say yes, some say no.

Answer

Mean Green states they have not had any grinding issues with the Mean Green 6600 Gear Reduction Starter.

As you mentioned there is a lot of discussion on this topic. If you are currently having grinding issues it’s recommended that you replace the flywheel along with the starter as the ring gear can become worn or damaged over time. Many who do this report excellent results.

I have had the mean green starter and brand new OEM flexplate (replaced both at same time) on my 05 LLY and the grinding issue has just come back with a vengenace. It has gotten so bad in two weeks that the truck won't even start sometimes. I installed the starter about 2.5 years ago.
